Biodiversity, a key environmental issue
Biodiversity is the cornerstone of our economy and society. It is defined as diversity between species, within species, ecosystems and their interactions. Biodiversity and nature’s benefits to humanity influence almost every aspect of human development and are essential to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They contribute to food production, water purification, climate regulation, and disease control, called ecosystem services. However, these resources are being depleted and degraded much faster than at any other time in human history, almost exclusively due to human activities.
